The Nor'easter of January 2011
You heard about it in the news, read about it on the web, now see it for yourself. On Tuesday evening, around 11:00 PM, a "Nor'easter" hit New England. A Nor'easter is the name given to storms that come across the continent and then hit the eastern seaboard, turn north east and go racing up to New England. The storm brings the moist air from the ocean and usually combineds with the cold air coming down out of Canada. Depending on where that front is located, it either brings wind and rain or wind and snow. This time is was snow. When viewing these pictures, just remember that on Tuesday afternoon there was no snow on the walks, driveway and most of the grass. There was a trace of snow left over from the blizzard that hit New England about 10 days ago, but it was soon covered by the 14" of snow that fell over the next 18 hours. Not a good time for the snow blower to quit working.
The snow was so heavy that it stuck to the branches and cause the plants to bend over too much.

This is looking from the porch out to the front yard. The hedge is almost buried.

Looks like the deer won't be eating this evergreen for some time.

The adirondack chairs that Jon built in woodshop in high school are not only a treat to sit in when the weather is nice but they are also a good measuring device on how much snowfall comes down.

Definitely I will have to shovel a path for Sophie to get out and do her business.

Just a little snow on the Honda Accord.

There is a driveway and a path some where down under the snow.

Looking down at the front walk out of the 2nd story window.

The snow fall was coming down at a rate of 3" an hour during the height of the storm.

Don't know if the tree will ever come back up.

That's the mailbox poking out of the top of the pile.

Looking from the front porch.

The stakes mark the path of the front walk.

A path for Sophie, but this is the 3rd time I shoveled it.

This is looking out of the utility front door.

This is looking out of the front door.

Looking out of the garage. All of this will have to be shoveled by hand.

The car is somewhere below this pile.

No snow brush and scrapper will be effective on this.

Starting to make a dent.

My driveway. Notice the small animal track.

Looking down the driveway.

Notice the small animal tracks heading for the bushes for shelter from the storm.

Making headway.

15", and this isn't a drift.

Getting farther down the path.

The snow piles up where you throw it.

I am only shoveling half of the walk - so I don't have a heart attack.
The secret of getting the snow off of the driveway is to get off all that you can and then let the sun do the rest. It heats up the asphalt and then the heat dissipates to the snow and ice.

Looking down the driveway.

This snow will last at least 40 days.

Looking down the driveway.

Looking down the street. The mailbox can still get mail.

Looking up the street

Lots of snow
